Okay, I am not sure how in the heck I ended up missing this amazing piece of software. Unified remote for android pretty much lets you control a ton of aspects of your personal computer. You have to install the unified remote application on your computer, and you also have to install the Android app (as with most everything on top free android apps, it is 100% free for the basic version).
After that, on your phone you pretty much just select your computer from the list, and you are off on your way. So simple.
It is not a vnc application, you do not see your computer on the phone. It works best for using it on your htpc or other media focused computer where you are looking at the screen, but using a dedicated remote or mouse/keyboard may be less than optimal for you.
It works amazing. You can take control of the mouse and watch it move on the screen. If you single tap it works as a left mouse click, and if you tap with two fingers it registers as if it was a right mouse click. There is also a file manager. This works out well for me since I usually download media on my main computer, and then move it to my shared folder when it is done. This way I don’t have to move my lazy butt off the bed to watch whatever I just got. Awesome.
The paid version offers more remote setups. I am mostly using windows media center with the hdhomerun prime, but sometimes I like to log into xbmc to watch some streaming media. Sadly the xbmc remote is part of the paid application. This is one app that I will be happy to pay for though. It is one of the most convenient things ever without having to deal with a full vpn setup. Perfect at what it does!
